Why can’t nudists use pen names?
In a recent blog I addressed six practical matters that naturists can perform to be more proactive in encouraging naturism. The first suggestion was to come from the closet’ as a naturist to trustworthy folks family, friends and colleagues. It is interesting that this suggestion is frequently matched with a good amount of energetic discussion. It’s after all a sensitive issue. It takes time to get to the stage of taking your clothes off in public, and it takes even more hours getting to the stage of telling others about one’s experience and alternative to practice social nudity.
One of the fascinating responses we received (about the recommendation to come out as a naturist) was criticism of our FKK organization’s leaders because of their use of pen names. The criticism, which was posted as public opinion, was cynical and judgmental (peculiar really coming from fellow naturists), indicating that FKK leaders are hypocritical to propose that naturists come out’, while they themselves use pen names. The criticism was so far off balance it deserves some attention, in order that new nudies, who may run into such extremist approaches, don’t shy away from naturism and the delight of sharing our bare culture with others.
Let us begin by noting the recommendation to come out as a naturist was balanced with decent advice. We encouraged that the coming out be exercised with caution aimed at sure individuals in your life and with the understanding that there are some people you may never tell your nudie experiences to. This is because, for many people, it can have serious impacts – in the work place for example. Use of pen names in national media is one form of caution that some people pick for all kinds of legitimate reasons. In fact it is a standard practice in many settings other than simply nudism.
Naturist pen names
The notion of coming out is certainly not hypocritical regarding using pen names on fkknudists or in the world media at large. There is an obvious and enormous common sense difference between coming out to trustworthy individuals within your real life family, close social circles and professional network vs. coming out willy nilly to the entire world through online social media, movie, television, etc. Graduating from the usage of a pen name to the use of one’s actual name can be an extremely significant choice with far reaching consequences, which for some individuals involves many complex concerns. Needless to say, many actors and writers use pen names their entire lives. They even use their nom de plume when advocating for specific causes. Yet it seems like just in the nudie world do we have a handful of tyrannical nudists who vehemently and vocally argue that all their hard work doesn’t mean much because they do not attach their birth name. Some rationales that nudie leaders who choose to come out to relatives and buddies, but never to the world at large, include things like: stalkers, bullying, public slander, job related sensitivities, social or extended family complications and the list goes on.
The kind of immature, one-size-fits-all philosophy, that accuses naturist leaders of hypocrisy for the use of pen names is thoughtless indeed. It smacks of extreme fanaticism and surely that is nothing that our nudie movement needs in the hyper body-phobic culture we live in. Truly caring, loving attitudes toward fellow naturists about when and how a naturist comes out, the usage of pen names (or NOT) etc., means respecting other’s fundamental right for solitude. Arrogantly chiding some people for not measuring around an artificially contrived and fanatically enforced set of rules makes zero sense. That’s the most certain method to set the wrong model to new nudies and may (understandably) scare them away.
I am talking about after all, what these critics of FKK are really suggesting by their thoughtless comments is that anyone who wants to get involved in naturism and desires to blog or advocate for it within the media, is a hypocrite if they aren’t willing or able to reveal to the entire world all their private advice?
At FKK we don’t strive to establish such callous expectancies of others. The use of pen names by some FKK leaders and not by others is the FKK way of saying it’s all about the love!’ We usually do not expect family nude sex parties to give up their privacy or personal independence as a way to become a nudie if they don’t freely choose to do this. In addition, the FKK leaders cannot be accused of hiding as they may be physically present at public occasions, tell people their real names, make no true attempt to conceal their identity and they use the names consistently so that folks understand who is liable for what. Consequently, the usage of a pen name, or not, by FKK leaders is exceptionally consistent with our most important core values and in no way hypocritical in my perspective.
In conclusion, let us trust that most nudies value each other (nudist leader or not) enough to allow one another the common courtesy to be as open or discreet as they choose about their alternative to practice naturism. They should be allowed to prosper within an environment that enables them to progress to whatever extent of coming out’ that they are comfortable with in their own time and own way without being judged because of their choices.
